Thelma Carnduff Obituary

Thelma M (Propst) Carnduff, 87, of Springfield, IL passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday October 10, 2021. Thelma was born in Greenview, IL on June 17, 1934 the daughter of Arthur and Vera (Losey) Propst.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Lee Carnduff; as well as her sister, Patricia and her brother, Ronnie.

Thelma is survived by her son, Mark Carnduff; sister, Linda Pastorius; brother, Richard Propst; grandchildren, Jennifer Carnduff-Lewis (husband, Ryan), and Cory Carnduff; great grandchildren, Rowena Lewis and one on the way; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.

No one could deny that Thelma was one busy woman.  From her days playing basketball as a member of Grundies Undies to her time as a Samaritan at St. John’s, she was always involved in multiple organizations and projects at once.  Many will remember her as the manager of the downtown Fannie Mae candy store, but she was also heavily involved at Third Presbyterian Church where she was the Crazy Lady in the Sunday School room, ran the crib room and was a church elder.  Thelma had also been a member of the Springfield Woman on Today since the late 80’s partnering with countless organizations through her work with the group.  Never content to remain idol Thelma quickly found herself working post retirement first at Dairy Queen and eventually at Dippin’ Dots in the mall finally giving that up to work for the Samaritans.  It is true to say that she was equally proud of every job she had and worked hard to give each organization her very best.

There is no doubt that Thelma will be missed by many who regarded her as a surrogate mother and grandmother.  She crocheted too many baby blankets to count, made wedding cakes for years and served as an honorary “Flower Girl” in several unsuspecting couples’ wedding rehearsals.

If only the phone lines connected to heaven we know her days would be filled with talking to all of those here on Earth that relied on her so much.
